A DS Lite makes a great White Day gift for many, especially considering how popular the system seems to be with the girls. White Day is like Valentines Day, except guys give gifts to girls (in Japan, girls give gifts to guys on Valentines Day). Obviously, there's still a lot of demand going into the Saturday morning launch of the two blue units.ĭemand may be super charged by a couple of other events. The DS Lite, and the standard DS for that matter, have remained off store shelves since then, and used buy-back prices are still so high that you can actually profit from your purchase at some stores. We already reported on the carnage that ensued during the first launch, both in our last Gaming Life in Japan issue and over at IGNDS. In fact, the regular DS saw some 50,000 units sold in the week of the DS Lite launch, suggesting that people are willing to purchase whatever version of the system they can get their hands on. Seventy-thousand may not sound like a lot, but Nintendo could've probably sold a bunch more had it been able to get more units out. The first launch took place on 3/2 and saw some 70,000 Crystal White DS Lite units get into the hands of consumers (and auctioneers, some of whom apparently got bums to line up in line in order to secure more systems).
